Another OHLA Student Moves on to University!

Laura Galindo   April 19, 2017  |  10:55 A.M.

Former OHLA student, Luis Landaeta, from Venezuela will continue his studies at FIU beginning of May. Luis attended OHLA for just 8 months, within that timeframe he reached our Advanced 2 level which enabled him to move on to university. He mentions one of the biggest advantages OHLA offers compared to other language schools is the opportunity to move on to American universities without taking the TOEFL or IELTS. His dream of attending one of the most reputable Business Schools has come true, for that he is thankful to have been part of OHLA Schools.

Luis’s success story is one of many. We know education is the focal point of studying English abroad and selecting the right language school is an important factor. OHLA focuses its efforts on immersing its international students in the US education system. By doing so, our students truly experience and understand the American business culture and are therefore able to succeed as professionals in the country. If your goal is to study at university in countries like the US and the UK, you need to be proficient in English. You just simply have to get started!

How to Make Friends When You Don’t Speak the Language

Laura Galindo   April 11, 2017  |  10:55 A.M.

If you think you won’t be able to communicate with others when you are in a foreign country, think again! Here are some tips on how to make friends even with language barriers:

1. Get a Foreign Language Phrasebook or Dictionary

When traveling to a country where you don’t speak the language it is a good idea to pick up a phrasebook. This will help you speak a few words and understand phrases in the English language. It will make communicating with locals much easier. Also, if you have a smart phone or access to Wi-Fi, there are various dictionary apps you can download before studying abroad. There are also translation apps that will certainly come in handy!

2. Practice your Body Language

Words are not the only way you are able to communicate with people. There are numerous ways to have a conversation with someone who speaks a different language than you. Facial expressions and hand gestures can often be helpful in conveying ideas or reinforcing meaning. Such gestures as pointing at an object will be universally understood.

3. Keep your Words Simple

Try to use the simplest words you can to express yourself. Slang, idioms, expressions, and technical language can complicate the communication process since they tend to be culturally specific. These common expressions in your language will not likely be understood by others from a different country. By using the simplest sentence structure you will avoid confusion.

4. Speak Slowly

Slowing down will make it easier for the person you are trying to communicate with to understand. Once you get in the habit of speaking slowly, your pronunciation will improve. If you speak English with a strong accent it is important to keep this in mind. Another benefit of speaking slowly is that it improves your grammar, you allow your brain to think of vocabulary you keep in the back of you mind.

Reasons to Intern Abroad

Laura Galindo  March 03, 2017  |  11:39 A.M.

Considering our Academic English + Volunteer Internship Program in NYC? Here are some international internships benefits to consider.

1. Make Your Resume Stand Out

Set yourself apart from students competing with you in the job market. An internship abroad will distinguish you by giving you sought after global skills. You will have not only lived in a new country but you will have learned about its job market. Interning abroad evokes cultural integration, therefore, it provides you with the chance to obtain international skillsets that you would not otherwise get by interning at home. Additionally, employers like to see that you are knowledgeable across various cultures.
2. Create a Global Network

All internships abroad will provide you the chance to make international contacts not otherwise available through a domestic internship. By being part of an international internship you will develop a community of international professionals that you will be able to contact in the future. In your own country you have already cultivated a network of experienced colleagues, friends, mentors and professors now imagine developing the same network in a completely different country.

3. Additional Professional Opportunities

While interning in the host country take advantage of pursuing other opportunities in the new city such as attending professional events and workshops. This can be largely advantageous if you intend to pursue a career abroad. Furthermore, a business oversees may have great practices you are unfamiliar with, you would then be able to bring those ideas back with you when you return to your home country.

4. Pathway to a Job Aboard

An internship does not guarantee a permanent job placement at the company, however, interning certainly brings you a step closer to your goal of working abroad. It is an opportunity to gain international experience and to add the company to your resume. An opportunity not highly considered is that if you excel in your internship the employer can act as a reference for you locally, which may lead to other job opportunities within the industry.

Open your eyes to new opportunities!

Advantages of Living with a Host Family Abroad

Laura Galindo  January 18, 2017  |  09:50 AM.

One of the most discussed topics when studying abroad is the living situation. OHLA offers a wide range of accommodation options, however, the most debated among them is homestay with a local family. Homestays can be a hugely rewarding experience, as it presents an unparalleled opportunity for an authentic cultural exchange. Living with your host family will enable you to practice English with native speakers in a comfortable setting. Additionally, your adopted family will help meeting new people and exploring the city a less stressful task.

The goal for every host family placement is a mutually rewarding and educational exchange. Therefore, sufficient preparation and orientation are imperative to help ensure a successful interchange for all parties. All OHLA host families are thoroughly screened and given training on becoming a host parent. Such trainings include:

* Information on student’s background (family, school, customs, and religion)
* The academic program in which the student is enrolled in
* Handbook on potential conflicts and ways to overcome any problems
* How to be a good host family and how to help your exchange student succeed

The visa interview is the most essential part of the entire process of obtaining a tourist or student visa. In spite of having all of the required documents and meeting all the criteria, visa applications often get refused. Being prepared and knowing what to expect for the visa interview can mean the difference between getting your visa approved or denied. Below are a few tips on preparing for your visa interview.

1. Wear formal clothing.
2. Be polite, greet the officer with a smile and say “good morning.” (or good afternoon)
3. Give brief and to-the-point answers.
4. Make direct eye contact with the officer.
5. Focus on your study goals and future plans during the interview not your desire to be with family or friends in the USA.
6. If you do not understand a question, say “I do not understand. Please repeat the question.”
7. Be honest during the interview.
8. Be prepared to express why you want to learn in the USA and why you will return to your country.
9. Have your financial documents with you and in order.

OHLA University Pathway Success Story: Alexey Chirkov

Eve Jacobson  |  October 31, 2016  |  09:31 AM.

Alexey Chirkov is one of many success stories showing how learning English as a second language can lead to great things. Alexey recently graduated with a Master’s Degree in Engineering Management from USF. Of course every success story has a beginning, which for Alexey started with a simple question; how to learn the English language? After realizing the importance of English language learning for his career aspirations, Alexey decided to come to an English school in the USA. Alexey began an online search for the best English school in the Miami. His search ended when he found Open Hearts Language Academy, (OHLA).

It was while Alexey was learning English as a foreign language that he was introduced to OHLA’s University Pathway Program which sends hundreds of international students to various universities all over the USA. Here is what Alexey had to say about the services he received as a University Pathway Student: “They made all the paper work for me, helped me with orientation, English learning, preparing for classes and exams, they also prepare you for GRE or GMAT tests, but make sure you understood the requirements of whether you need this test not. This helps students to integrate into the college environment. Even for me, when I had already been graduate student with master degree at the beginning.

Another important thing that I have experienced was meeting the classmates in small classrooms. We were around 10 students, and we all knew each other at the very beginning of the program. Since that time we are all still friends, and help each other with all kind of problems. Of course, I have my major classes, but there you will most likely listen to the professor, and learn the subject, and you won’t have many reasons to communicate with other students.

The moral of Alexey’s story is this; If you are looking to learn the English language, Open Hearts Language Academy is a great option to enable English language learning to achieve your higher education dreams. In his own words “I am happy that I had this experience in my life, and I believe I will remember it for the rest of my life! Good Luck!”. This is why, in Alexey’s opinion OHLA is the best language academy to learn the English language.

One of the most sought after activities for all our students from all ages is our Orlando weekend trip. Students are able to immerse themselves in the world’s top theme parks just minutes away from our OHLA Orlando campus, or a short 4-hour drive from our OHLA Miami campus.
The uniquely themed parks provide students with an unforgettable experience. They can see everything from rollercoasters, shows, interactive attractions, educational events to nighttime parades. Once the students have booked the weekend trip with our Activities Coordinator, they do not have to worry about paying for the entrance, accommodation, meals or transportation. Although our top requested theme parks are Universal Studios and Island of Adventure, below you will find the top 10 theme parks ranked by “USA Today 10 Best”.

Advantages of Living with a Host Family Abroad

Laura Galindo  | January 18, 2017  |  09:50  AM.

For further information on host families please contact our Homestay Director, Margie Acero at:macero@ohla.com

OHLA University Pathway Success Story: Alexey Chirkov

Eve Jacobson  | October 31, 2016  |  10:10  AM.

Students in each class prepared a group presentation on a set country, they incorporated food, visuals, traditional clothing and dance. OHLA students did an exceptional job at conveying the various elements from their countries. Students were able to circulate visiting other students’ stands, while gaining knowledge on each country they were able to savor the distinct traditional foods. This academic event was part of the students’ Block 2 score, teachers assessed their students’ for an oral task.
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin
